Fungal Toe Nail

There are many different types of nail fungi. As well as being unsightly, fungal toenail infections can also cause the nail to become thickened, crumbly or even fall off making self-management difficult. At Same Day Podiatry, we can diagnose the type of fungal nail condition you have, and offer you a tailored treatment package.

Sometimes, anti-fungal nail lacquers can be effective. Although, for many types of fungal nail conditions they are not very effective. Often, oral prescription-only antifungal tablets are required. If you have tried nail lacquers and not seen any results, this may explain why.

We are one of the very few podiatry companies that can prescribe you prescription-only medicines to treat your fungal toenail. Do not waste your time and money looking elsewhere, get it treated for good with Same Day Podiatry. Your prescriber can go through all the details with you. Call us today.

Nail Fungus Microbiology Testing

At Same Day Podiatry Ltd, we offer specialised microbiology testing to look for some of the most common types of fungus that cause toenail infections.

When considering how to best treat fungal nail infections, it is important to know the type or class of fungi that may be causing your infection. This allows us to tailor your medication regimen to target the right "bug".

Nail Sample Testing FAQ

How do you do this?

It is simple, either your Podiatrist will take a nail sample specimen during your appointment, or you can send in your own nail sample to Same Day Podiatry.

How does it work?

Your sample is placed onto an agar plate and cultured for 2 weeks. Our team will then analyse the sample to establish if there is a presence of a certain class of fungus called Dermatophytes. These are the most common infecting organisms. This allows us to tailor your medication regimen to target the right "bug".

What if it is positive?

If there is evidence that a dermatophyte fungus is causing your infection, depending on your type of nail infection, we will either recommend an appropriate nail lacquer or prescribe you prescription only medicines, such as Lamisil (Terbinafine) tablets to treat your infection.

Does it test for all types of fungi?

No, our examination kits look specifically for the most common class of fungi called Dermatophytes which account for 90% of all fungal toenail infections. If the test is negative, but there is still a strong clinical suspicion that you do have a fungal infection (i.e. if the symptoms are there), then we may need to refer you on for different testing.

Is treating my infection safe?

Taking the sample is safe. Using nail lacquers is generally safe. There is a small risk (approximately 1 in 50,000) of liver complications with some oral antifungals. Therefore, it may be necessary to arrange a liver function test as a precaution
